On February 8, 2020, MAYEIN (Mentors Assistance for Youths and Entrepreneurs Initiative) rounded off the training workshop for The Vale College teachers.
The day started started with a video on goal setting by Stephen Duneier. Stephen talked about how changing our approach to what we need to focus on can have a drastic effect on our goals. He explained the approach to decision making that transformed him from someone who struggled with simple tasks to a guy who is continuously achieving even his most ambitious dreams. It was a inspiring video.
Mrs Jumoke Aleoke-Malachi, a human resource manager, led the second session tagged: Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace for Teachers And School Administrators.
Using real-life scenarios, she helped us understand how workers with higher EQ are better able to work in teams, adjust to change and be flexible. No matter how many degrees or paper qualifications a person has, if he/she doesn’t have certain emotional qualities, he/she is unlikely to succeed.
Mr Emeka Ossai, chief community builder of Campus Labs, led the third session : A mindset for excelling in the Workplace – Transforming Teachers’ Mindset. He made us realise that our talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching and persistence.
He doesn’t necessarily think everyone’s the same or anyone can be Einstein, but he believes everyone can get smarter if they work at it. He encouraged staff to focus more on accepting challenges and view setbacks as opportunities to learn and improve. Shifting the mindsets of the staff and school from fixed to growth will increase achievement. Continuous self-evaluation and the willingness to change is the key to true improvement, both individually and within a firm.
During the midterm break, Mrs Edem Ossai will have a session on the staff’s WhatsApp group to guide teachers through filling the Professional Development and Action Plan with aim of optimising teachers’ growth, performance and impact. The plan will also help teachers in monitoring and evaluating growth and positive impact in the work place.
